More than 16 years after the release of Titanic, Kate Winslet opened up about her on-screen love Leonardo DiCaprio, and whether anything romantic ever went down between the two off camera.
"I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing," Winslet, 38, told Marie Claire UK for a November issue cover story interview.
Winslet and DiCaprio appeared in Titanic
in their early 20s, playing the star-crossed lovers Rose and Jack
aboard the doomed ship. Though they've voiced their affection for one
another multiple times in the years since — DiCaprio even walked her
down the aisle at her 2012 wedding to husband Ned Rocknroll — Winslet maintained in her Marie Claire interview that there has never been anything more between the two.
"It's so disappointing for
people to hear that, because in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story
we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we
never did," she continued. "He always saw me as one of the boys. I've
never really been a girly-girl."
"We needed each other to lean on
because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours
and it was a shock to the system," she said.
DiCaprio has gone on the record with his love for Winslet in the past.
"She's the greatest person," he told USA Today of Winslet. "She's so
genuine. I love that girl."
