Jared Leto has just purchased at former military compound in Laurel Canyon for $5 million.
The property, which was sold for $750,000, was previously purchased in 1994 artist Mark Lipscomb and former judge John Ladner.
Originally built in the early '40s, the compound, often called Lookout Mountain Laboratory or the Lookout Mountain Air Force Station, was used by the military as a film studio to make propaganda films about atomic bomb tests until the late '60s.
The strange property has been on and off the market since 2010, when it was listed at $6.3 million. In early 2012 the property was relisted at $5.75 million. In late 2012 there were reports that the compound was being used as a high-end rehab facility.
The industrial compound is situated in the canyon on a narrow steet and sits on about 1.7 acres. The interior has more than 50,000 square feet. There are eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, several kitchens and several living/dining spaces.
The space also features a spiral staircase, concrete art galleries, a theater and a soundstage, which has been used as a painting studio and gallery. It has 3-foot- thick concrete walls, a bomb shelter, two subterranean parking garages and 17 climate-controlled film vaults.
In addition, there is a blacktop motor court, outdoor living and entertaining areas, a tiled courtyard, a backyard with several decks and and a lagoon-style swimming pool.
