‘Jurassic World’ Passes ‘Avengers’ For Number 3 On All-Time Box Office List

Jurassic World” has grossed $1.522 billion at the worldwide box office, passing “Marvel’s The Avengers” to become the third-highest-grossing movie in history, Universal Pictures said Wednesday.

That means the only two films to have done better at the worldwide box office are James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster “Avatar” with $2.78 billion, and his 1997 disaster epic “Titanic,” with $2.18 billion.  Disney’s Marvel superhero mashup “The Avengers” brought in $1.520 billion in 2012, and “Jurassic World” overtook it Tuesday night, Universal said.

The sequel to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 dinosaurs-gone-wild classic is the year’s top earner both domestically and overseas. “Jurassic World” has grossed $614.3 million at the domestic box office and is only the fourth film in North American history to cross $600 million. The film has grossed $907.3 million internationally.

Chris Pratt stars in “Jurassic World,” which broke the record for a domestic opening with $208.8 million on the June 12 weekend. Colin Trevorrow directed, in just his second feature film outing. Bryce Dallas Howard and Vincent D’Onofrio co-star in the film, which was produced by Frank Marshall and Patricia Crowley, with Spielberg executive producing along with Legendary Pictures executives Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni.
The final territory for “Jurassic World” is Japan, where it will open on August 5.
